This week one of our nonprofit clients was challenged by a donor to find a way raise funds by leveraging the 50-mile bike ride the donor is taking this summer. After discussing several approaches, our client decided to use Join Me, our new peer-to-peer online fundraising tool, to take advantage of the generous offer. Our client will build the organizational main program Webpage describing their mission, and their bike-riding donor will build a fundraiser page that discusses his ride, why he wants to dedicate the ride to this nonprofit, and asks for donations to commemorate his ride. The donor will email his contacts to ask them to visit his fundraiser page to donate. He’ll also post a link to his page on the social network sites to which he belongs to request donations from friends and family that socialize with him on those pages.
While working with our client to determine how to use Join Me to this program’s best advantage, I realized that this campaign could be easily extended to a multitude of donor summertime activities—running, biking, water sports, hiking, mountain or rock climbing—any activity that challenges the individual to achieve a physical feat.
Do you know if any of your donors are training for a physical challenge that takes place in the next few months? Would they be willing to take that personal challenge and turn it into a fundraising opportunity for your organization? To find out, and recruit those donors, post a challenge on your Website home page, send an email blast to your donor base, add it to your next newsletter, and ask your local media to spread the word—communicate the message in as many ways as you can. Ask your staff, too. Set up your organizational Webpage as soon as you get your first volunteer so you can publish your campaign fast and add new fundraisers to your page when they come forward.
